GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A 41-year-old man found unresponsive on a Grand Island street has died. Authorities are now calling his death a homicide.

Grand Island Police said Abdulma JeedAbdulrahman Khamis, a homeless man, was apparently assaulted last Friday. He sustained serious trauma to his head. He was discovered near 502 West Louise Street in Grand Island.

Khamis had been hospitalized since being found. Police said he died Wednesday as a result of his injuries.

Neighbors said they didn't see or hear anything happen. However, some aren't exactly taken back by this incident. They feel the neighborhood could be much more safe.

The investigation to the assault is active and ongoing.
