AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) - As Congress is preparing to draft a new Farm Bill, Congressman Adrian Smith is hosting listening sessions to hear from producers and consumers about what they want to see in the agriculture policy.
Congressman Smith said it's never too late to start thinking about the next Farm Bill.
He adds one thing he learned from this session and one earlier this week in Scottsbluff is how important crop insurance is to producers.
Some farmers said having a strong safety net or crop insurance program is their top priority for the new Farm Bill.
They add there's a lot of things they can do as farmers to reduce risks, but when it comes to natural disasters, it's difficult to work that into risk management.
Congressman Smith said the new Farm Bill needs to be completed in 2018, so he will be gathering more input to share.
