Loose chunk of concrete closes lane on Kearney's 2nd Avenue Overpass

NBC Nebraska The Kearney Public Works department Monday closed one of the two south-bound lanes on the second avenue overpass. The inside lane is closed for repairs until further notice.

Public works director Rod Wiederspan told NBC Nebraska that a large chunk of concrete popped loose creating a giant pothole. Wiederspan said that Sunday's warm temperatures combined with the winter's freeze/thaw cycle may be the reason a four-foot by two-foot chunk of concrete popped loose.

Wiederspan said the pothole is too large to repair with ordinary hot mix. Instead, city crews will have to cut out the material adjacent to the pothole and make a permanent concrete repair.

In the meantime the south-bound inside lane on the overpass is closed. Drivers were urged to use caution while repairs are underway.
