UPDATE: NP man arrested for stealing Cody Park penguin, and other stolen items

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - The North Platte Police Department says two people reported someone stole items from their vehicle on the 800 block of west "E" street on January 9th.

Reported missing from a Dodge pickup was a two way radio and hunting optics.

One of the victims found a cell phone inside their vehicle that didn't belong to them. It was later determined by police that the phone belonged to Alexander Fourtner.

Officers went to Fourtner's home and found the penguin in his bedroom.

The penguin had some minor damage, and the words "Buckaroo Bandits" written on it in permanent marker.

Police also found other stolen property from vehicles all over North Platte over the past several weeks.

Alexander told police he didn't steal the penguin and someone brought it to his house.

Police are still collecting evidence in the theft cases. Fourtner was arrested. Police expect more charges.

North Platte Park Supervisor, Lyle Minshull, says the man who they've had on security for 22 years, knows precisely where all the display figurines are located. Minshull says, "once he opened it up (the display), and saw it, he noticed something was missing."

Minshull says, "It's so unfortunate something was taken."

A animatronic penguin from Cody Park's Santa's Workshop display is missing.

Officials believe the penguin went missing sometime between 4:30 and 10:00 on Monday night.

The 3-foot-tall penguin has been part of city's Christmas display for more than 50 years.
