Spencer vs. the Pros - Round Two

VALENTINE, Neb. -- To Hole #16 we go in the Spencer vs. the Pros series, as I return to the Prairie Club south of Valentine this week to take on Director of Golf Loudan Steffes on the Par-4, 8th Hole of the Dunes Course.

Enjoy!

-------------------------------------------------------

"Welcome into yet another edition of Spencer vs. the Pros," I said. "We're back at the Prairie Club up in Valentine this week and joining me right now is the Director of Golf Loudan Steffes. Loudan, we're on the Par-4, 8th Hole of the Dunes Course. You said it's the toughest hole out here at least for the Dunes Course. Walk me through what we have behind us."

"OK, so it's the number one handicap hole," Steffes said. "We've got big bunkers down the right and the left. You have to hit your drive just to the left of the right-side bunker in the fairway in order to see the green for your second shot, and it's kind of a guessing game from that point, so."

"OK, well everybody at home go ahead and close your eyes, and if you're not listening to me, let's go ahead and take a look," I joked.

Steffes led off the hole with a perfect drive, putting it just left of the right fairway bunker. I on the other hand had a more average drive that got pushed to the right, certainly making the hole significantly longer.

On my second shot, I decided to lay-up short of the hazard as I was still more than 250 yards away from the green. I played it perfectly, just in front of the bunker.

Steffes then hit a shot even he joked he might not be able to duplicate, soaring it over the hazard to a green that he was blind to. His shot just so happened to land just a few feet from the hole, making a birdie nearly a guarantee!

My third shot finally found the green, but left me with a long uphill putt if I had any hope of saving par. I ended up striking the putt well, but came up ever-so short on what proved to be the perfect line. I tapped in from there for a bogey.

As for Steffes, he took care of his short birdie putt to edge me by two strokes on the hole.

"As you can see, there's a theme with these Spencer vs. the Pros," I joked. "Another setback for me here down the stretch, and another birdie for the pros. A beautiful hole by you. That blind second shot, putting it within about five-to-seven feet it seemed like. How did we play the hole overall?"

"Overall, we played the hole well," Steffes said. "I hit a good drive, and just hit a great second shot that just ended up a couple feet away there with a tap-in for birdie, and you had a long second shot in, but you played the hole smart, laid it up short of the bunker and got up there and two-putted, so all in all a good hole."

"OK, a birdie for the pros, a bogey for me," I said. "As you can tell, I don't think I'm going to win this series. That does it for another edition of Spencer vs. the Pros."

-------------------------------------------------------

We're now through 16 holes in the series, and I trail by 10 strokes, making a comeback look awfully improbable. On August 20, we'll be returning to the Centura Hills, where I'll be playing the Par-4, 12th Hole course owner Garrett Rathke.

Tune in then!
