GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) In an updated budget proposal, Grand Island city administrator Marlan Ferguson is recommending that the city add back five of the nine police and fire positions that were originally slated for cuts.

In documents prepared for Tuesday night's city council meeting, Ferguson recommended adding back three paramedic positions to the fire department and two officers back to the police department. In addition, he recommended adding back a horticulture position to the parks department.

Ferguson also recommends the city council approve a wheel tax, which would be levied against vehicles owned by Grand Island residents. He did not recommend the amount of the tax.

If the council gives the go-ahead Tuesday night, the city administration would prepare the formal ordinances to be approved at the Grand Island city council meeting August 22nd.

The city budget has to be turned into the state of Nebraska by September 20th.
