Hastings, NE -- On June 3, 70 of the best high school football players from across the state of Nebraska will compete in the 59th annual Shrine Bowl at Carol Cope Stadium on the campus of UNK.
Of those 70 athletes, a handful hail from right here in Central Nebraska. That includes Hastings High quarterback Vinny Schmidt (South) and wide receiver Payton Kinne (North) of Grand Island Senior High.
"It feels really great," said Schmidt. "It's something that I've always wanted to play in ever since I've known about it. Since eight grade year, [so] it's just something as a kid growing up in high school I guess you want to play in the state of Nebraska and I'm really thankful I get to play in it. "
"I think it's a really special deal to be included on this and have a chance to play against these guys that are the best in the state," added Kinne. "I'm very competitive, so I'm planning to win. It's for fun, but I want to win. I'm ready to go out there and win."
Fellow teammate and defensive lineman Griffin Wentz will also be joining Kinne on the North team.
